The Nunavut Beneficiaries Scholarships Program

NITC believes strongly in promoting the development of Nunavut by supporting education, and especially post-secondary education, for young Inuit.

In 1994, several Inuit organizations launched a Scholarship Program aimed at encouraging Land Claims beneficiaries to pursue advanced education in business, management, resource management, community development, culture and the social sciences - all areas of critical importance to the successful implementation of the Land Claim.

Eligibility

To be eligible for these scholarships, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled as a beneficiary under the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement;
  • Be enrolled or accepted in a recognized, full-time, accredited university or college degree or certificate program (two year minimum);
  • Be considered a full-time student in your chosen program;
  • Maintain a full class load for the program;
  • Achieve an average of at least 70% for the school year preceding your application, and maintain an average of at least 70% while receiving the scholarship.

Sponsoring Organizations

The Scholarship Program is part of the comprehensive implementation training strategy developed by Inuit organizations with direct or indirect responsibility for Claim implementation and management. The sponsors of the Scholarship program are:

  • Nunavut Implementation Training Committee, Inc.
  • Kivalliq Inuit Association
  • Kitikmeot Inuit Association
  • Qikiqtani Inuit Association

Scholarships

The scholarship available for students enrolled in full-time, eligible programs is $1,750.00/yr. Students attending Nunavut Sivuniksavut are eligible to receive $1,000.00/yr.

Scholarship Requirements

Successful applicants must have an average of at least 70% for the school year preceding your application, and are required maintain an overall average of at least 70% while receiving the scholarship. Students are required to submit marks at the end of each academic term or semester.

You may apply for and receive one scholarship under this program during each year you are attending eligible diploma and/or degree programs of study.

Taxes

Under Canadian law, all scholarships are considered taxable income, and must be reported on your next tax return form. You will receive a T4/A form, and must attach it to your return. However, all assistance provided to Aboriginal peoples in Canada is deductible from your tax.
